Enhancing Sustainability at European Stadiums by implementing STAR, the innovative and proven Reusable Cup Lending System
As the global emphasis on sustainability continues to grow, industries worldwide are actively seeking innovative solutions to reduce waste and minimize environmental impact. European stadiums, with their large crowds and high consumption rates, have a significant role to play in this endeavour. This imperative for sustainability was further underscored by the introduction of the European Single-Use Plastics (SUP) directives in 2021, aimed at curbing plastic waste in the environment.
The development of STAR
Following the SUP directives, Belgian event organizers, including football clubs, have been mandated since June 15, 2023, to adopt reusable cups, ensuring that at least 90% of the material is collected for reuse. Compliance with this directive necessitates substantial efforts from the clubs, encompassing cup procurement, washing procedures, and the establishment of a deposit and return system. Each club is also required to demonstrate that at least 90% of all materials utilized are collected for reuse, as stipulated by the legal amendment.
Aucxis developed STAR, an innovative RFID solution for the smooth lending and return of reusable cups. In addition to the ecological aspect, STAR saves time and costs and provides a user-friendly experience using RFID combining efficiency and convenience.
Setting the standard
By implementing STAR, the European Stadium & Safety Management Association (ESSMA) can lead the way in fostering sustainability within the sports and entertainment industry.
Reducing Single-Use Plastic:
European stadiums often witness vast amounts of single-use plastic waste generated during events. From disposable cups for beverages to plastic bottles, these items contribute to environmental pollution and harm ecosystems. By introducing STAR, ESSMA can significantly reduce the consumption of single-use plastics within stadiums, mitigating the environmental footprint of events.
Promoting Environmental Awareness:
The implementation of a reusable cup lending system provides an opportunity to raise awareness among stadium attendees about the importance of environmental conservation. Through educational campaigns and promotional materials, ESSMA can engage fans in sustainable practices and encourage them to actively participate in reducing waste generation.
Enhancing Fan Experience:
Using the STAR solution, payment for drinks and returning cups is facilitated through an automatic scan, eliminating long queues. The deposit for the cups is returned to the payer ultra-fast, error-free and fairly. No hassle, no stress, just seamless transactions and happy vibes.
Collaborating with Partners:
ESSMA can collaborate with beverage vendors, sponsors, and stadium management to implement and sustain the reusable cup lending system effectively. By engaging key stakeholders in the planning and execution process, ESSMA can leverage their expertise and resources to ensure the success of the initiative. Additionally, partnerships with sustainability-focused organizations can further amplify the impact of the program and garner support from a broader audience.
Measuring Impact and Continuous Improvement:
To assess the effectiveness of the reusable cup lending system, ESSMA can implement monitoring mechanisms to track key metrics such as waste reduction, cup utilization rates, and fan satisfaction levels. Regular evaluation and feedback collection allow ESSMA to identify areas for improvement and refine the system to better meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders. By continuously striving for innovation and excellence, ESSMA can establish itself as a leader in sustainable stadium management practices.
Conclusion
The adoption of STAR’s reusable cup lending system by the European Stadium & Safety Management Association presents a significant opportunity to promote sustainability, enhance fan experience, and demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to continuous improvement, ESSMA can inspire positive change within the sports and entertainment industry while leaving a lasting legacy of environmental responsibility for future generations.
ESSMA members can harness the power of Aucxis's expertise to elevate their stadium management practices, setting a new standard for sustainability in the sports and entertainment industry.
