FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 starts today

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 starts today with the game between Russia and New Zealand at 6PM local time (5PM GMT+2). The opening match will be played at ESSMA Stadium Member FC Zenit's new Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Since 2005, this eight-team (from 6 confederations) tournament is held the year before the World Cup, thus giving the host country an opportunity to test their facilities ahead of the main event.

A total of 16 games will be played over the course of the tournament in Moscow, Kazan, Sochi and Saint Petersburg. The latter will also be the scene for the final on 2 July.

The venues

  1. Moscow - Spartak Stadium, 45.000 (home of Spartak Moscow, ESSMA Stadium Member) (named Otkritie Arena, but not for FIFA tournaments)
  2. Kazan - Kazan Arena, 44,779
  3. Sochi - Fisht Olympic Stadium, 47,700
  4. Saint Petersburg - Saint Petersburg Stadium, 68,134 (named Krestovsky Stadium, but not for FIFA tournaments)

During ESSMA's EU Stadium Tour in Russia from 2-5 July 2017, we will visit the Spartak Stadium and the Saint Petersburg Stadium. Furthermore, we will visit other stadiums in Moscow, such as the newly renovated Luzhniki Stadium, host of the FIFA World Cup 2018 final. On 2 July, as part of ESSMA's EU Stadium Tour, we will attend the play off game for the 3rd place of the Confederations Cup at Spartak Stadium.
