Five facts to remember about ESSMA Spotlight

From May 31st to June 4nd, ESSMA organized 5 interesting afternoon sessions, filled with top-notch speakers such as MLS, Leicester City FC, The GMA, PSV and many others!

During these sessions, ESSMA zoomed in on different aspects of stadium management. Nevertheless, we’d like to present you five learnings which are relevant to the entire ESSMA community.

  • Bigger is not always better. In her new stadium development, SBV Excelsior aims to develop real estate options within a small and compact stadium instead of a major enlargement of the stadium bowl.
  • Converting technical pitch specifications into easy-to-grasp visuals pays off, according to John Ledwidge’s experience in Leicester City. By doing so, he convinced the board to invest sufficiently in pitch staff and equipment.
  • Flexible workspaces in the stadium creates revenues but also additional cost due to wear and tear of the stadium. Make sure the balance is in order, according to PSV, KRAGT and Paul Turner.
  • Fan mobility counts for 45% of the organisation’s carbon footprint today. If fans can be convinced to choose other forms of mobility, the footprint could significantly decline. Fortunately several stadiums like Emirates Stadium and Estádio do Dragāo are moving in that direction.
  • Entertaining fans for 7 hours with only 30 minutes match time, Ascot Racecourse does it every match day. By using technology like Augmented Reality or phone apps, fans are inclined to extend their visit.

A view overseas: urban stadium development is on the rise again.

In the United States, stadiums are returning downtown instead of building in spacious, suburban regions. It seems the connection with city life gains importance again.
