Inauguration of Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano
After residing over 50 years in the Estadio Vicente Calderon, Atletico Madrid’s home games will be played in the new Wanda Metropolitano, located in the north-east of Madrid. Construction started in 2011, on the grounds of the old La Peineta, an athletics stadium.
The club focused on spaciousness, comfort and safety of supporters above the capacity. Even though the amount of seats in the stadium increased by 21%. Several features implemented in the design are more distance between the rows, more suitable access for disabled fans and 96% of all seats will be protected when it rains. In terms of ticketing, there are 20 different pricing and seating categories, giving each fans the opportunity to find a suitable ticket. Furthermore, Neptuno Atletico de Madrid Premium, Wanda Metropolitano’s VIP hospitality area, has a wide range of premium boxes with around 7,000 seats available during games.Lighting installations from ESSMA’s Stadium Partner, Philips Lighting, have been implemented in the stadium and Philips Lighting will be Atletico Madrid’s official lighting partner for the next four seasons. Wanda Metropolitano will be the first stadium worldwide to benefit from the Philips ArenaExperience, a multi-purpose LED stadium lighting system, which encompasses LED lighting for pitch, stadium façade and hospitality areas.
We can proudly say that Atlético de Madrid will count with the best lighting experience of a football stadium. Philips is, without a doubt the best partner to take the leap into the new concept of show that we want to implement in the Wanda Metropolitano. The lighting will be a substantial part of the experience of the fans who visit us from next season; before, during and after the match.

Atletico Madrid won their first home game in their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium 1-0 with a goal of Griezmann in the 29th minute. The Wanda Metropolitano will be the host of the UEFA Champions League Final in 2019.
