Supreme Committee's sustainable approach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ stadiums
Achieving sustainable development is a key objective and the goal for all proposed 2022 FIFA World Cup™ stadiums is to receive the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification. The GSAS certification is intended to assess the environmental impact of the construction process for any types of projects. The criteria and measurements are specifically developed to evaluate the environmental impact associated with the construction of buildings and include issues such as construction management, waste management, and material use.
Khalifa International Stadium is the first 2022 FIFA World Cup™ stadium to receive the GSAS certification with a four-star rating.
Another initiative from SC are their sustainability workshops, which have already been organised at Lusail Stadium and Qatar Foundation Stadium with over 30 stadium professionals aiding to highlight lessons learned and best practices in relation to sustainability planning, design and implementation.
"Currently we have seven active stadium construction sites, all fully committed to Qatar’s sustainability pledge. Across these projects, within the staff, consultants and contractors working there, we have amassed a wealth of information and experience from across the world"
Bodour Al Meer, Sustainability & Environmental Manager SC
Furthermore, in February 2018, the SC inaugurated their SC Tree Nursery. The Tree Nursery is part of the SC’s commitment to ensure that the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ will leave a lasting and sustainable environmental legacy for the State of Qatar.
“The turf being grown at the nursery is unique in that it has been developed in Qatar specifically to withstand both the country’s climate year-round and the rigours of a tournament as competitive as the FIFA World Cup. Another unique aspect of the project is that its irrigation system uses recycled water fed from the nearby Doha North Sewage Treatment Works Plant, helping ensure that this is a sustainable project in every aspect.”
