SAFA (South African Football Association) and ESSMA league member LaLiga, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which focuses on initiatives in terms of improving the growth of football in South Africa.

During the press conference in Johannesburg, both Javier Tebas, President of LaLiga, and Danny Jordaan, President of SAFA, stated that the key objective is to boost the development of South African Football.

“We are delighted to be partnering with SAFA and are very impressed with their goals for vision 2022. We can only hope that this collaboration will ultimately benefit the footballing community in South Africa."

Antonio Barradas, Director LaLiga Africa

One of the initiatives is that LaLiga donates 2000 soccer balls which will be distributed to schools in rural areas. Furthermore, certified coaches from LaLiga will help train local coaches to improve their skills. The main focus will be on schools, rural areas, grassroots football as well as women’s football. Moreover, young and promising South African talents will receive the opportunity to train in Spain and showcase their skills.

“Women’s football development is a special area which needs special dedication in SAFA to realise Vision 2022 goals. It is within women’s football where we have identified massive potential for growth. We are glad that this is one of several areas where SAFA and LaLiga will work hand in hand."

Danny Jordaan, President SAFA

Together with LaLiga, SAFA aspires to achieve its Vision 2022 goals, with the development of women’s football as one of the priorities. Moreover, the partnership aims to bring Spanish football closer to fans, especially on the ever-growing African audience.
