Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are gaining a foothold in the sports industry. Especially in terms of fan experience it is an interesting opportunity for clubs to explore. Several clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City FC have launched VR apps earlier, Juventus FC and FC Bayern Munich are following the trend. With VR and AR apps, clubs create opportunities for global fans to feel more connected to the club with for example a VR tour in the stadium or during matches.

Juventus FC

Juventus FC recently launched its own Virtual Reality app, Juventus VR. With the app, fans have the chance to enter the Bianconeri dressing room, feel the atmosphere of the Allianz Stadium and get a behind-the-scenes impression of the Juventus Center. Federica Borin, Marketing Manager at Juventus FC, explained during the ESSMA Fan Entertainment Workshop, how they manage Fan Relationship Management and engage with their fans. The Juventus VR app is an interesting implementation of their strategy.

FC Bayern Munich

FC Bayern Munich has developed an AR feature, which has been implemented in their existing FC Bayern Munich app. The new feature allows fans to create a mixed reality with players like Neuer and Robben. When fans use the camera on their smartphone or any flat surface, one of the players will appear on the screen, giving fans the chance to take a screenshot photo with the Bayern stars.
