ESSMA SMART & Sustainability Workshop at the Amsterdam ArenA: the Highlights

This year’s SMART & Sustainability Workshop was organised at Amsterdam ArenA. Over 23 members from 10 countries learned insights and shared knowledge related to smart stadiums, energy management and sustainability cases. Moreover, participants enjoyed an extensive ‘into the future’ Amsterdam ArenA tour.

Day 1

Smart stadiums was the first topic covered during the workshop. Jamilia Mehdiyeva shared several smart technologies implemented at Baku Olympic Stadium related to security, earthquake warning, irrigation, facade, etc. The second case focused on the transformation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its sustainability credentials.

Furthermore, the workshop focused on energy managementMichael Lloyd, Deputy Stadium Manager at Arsenal FC, focused on operational sustainability, energy efficiency and their approach in becoming a more sustainable club. Blaire Bartholomew, a BASIS member, discussed the current landscape of the energy sector related to the role of stadiums and venues. In addition, Henk van Raan showcased several examples on how they turned Amsterdam Arena into a smart stadium and the impact of energy storage on both the venue and the surrounding area.

Day 1 closed with an extensive ‘into the future’ stadium tour during which Henk van Raan showed participants around the Amsterdam ArenA. The tour included a stop at the area where they store  recycled Nissan Leaf batteries and the Amsterdam ArenA Innovation Centre.

Day 2

Russell Seymour, Sustainability Manager at Marylebone Cricket Club, kicked off Day 2 with the sustainability case of Lord’s Cricket Ground. He highlighted the key sustainable elements of the venue’s redevelopment project, Lord’s Cricket Ground’s 10-point sustainability policy and their approach towards waste management. Next, Didier Wauters focused on the importance of creating sustainability criteria and certifications for stadiums and venues which have been converted to 15 inputs to create benchmarks. Lastly, Dominic Goggins talked about the base communication strategy and how to recognise what your audience cares about when it comes to sustainability.
